How to Set Up Cart Popup Product Recommendations

Overview


The cart popup smart upsell widget is a great upselling technique to put more products in front of your customers before they reach the checkout page. The widget allows you to display single and multiple product recommendations on a popup based on the customer’s current product selection or products in the cart as soon as they click the buy now, add-to-cart, or proceed to checkout button.


The cart popup product recommendations can be configured to display


  • On the product page, when the customer adds a product to the cart or clicks the Buy now button
  • On the cart page or cart drawer, when the customer clicks to proceed to checkout


Additionally, merchants can track the performance of the cart popup recommendation strategy with critical metrics on the cart popup smart upsell widget dashboard.


Set up cart popup smart upsell widget


  1. Go to Cross-sell widgets in your AfterShip Personalization admin.
  2. Move to Cart popup and click Get started.
  3. You can edit an existing campaign (widget) or create a new one. To create a new one, select Create widget.
  4. Select the popup template out of the two available options and click Create.


  • Single product: enables you to recommend a single product to the customers
  • Multiple products: enables you to recommend multiple products in the same popup to the customers



  1. After selecting the template, the cart popup editor will open.
  2. You will see three significant tabs to customize the popup’s basic settings, recommendation strategy, display criteria, and style.


Settings



  1. Offer status: To enable the status of the smart cart, click Edit.


  • On the popup, select the Shopify Themes where you want the cart popup to display.


You have the option of testing the cart popup widget on your store's Unpublished theme(s) first to avoid any unexpected errors on the main Published theme.


  • Click Confirm to activate the cart popup for the selected themes.


  1. Product recommendations: This section displays the complete list of active and inactive recommendations strategies you have created till now that are being used for different offers and widgets you have built for your store.


  • These strategies determine which products are going to be recommended in your widgets.
  • These pre-made/existing strategies are centralized on one dashboard and can be reused for different widgets.
  • Expand the dropdown to access the list of strategies or simply search the strategy you are looking for.
  • Select the strategy that best aligns with your current requirements for the cart popup.
  • Click Edit if you wish to set up a new strategy from scratch or modify the existing one. You will be taken to the Strategies dashboard where you can take the mentioned actions.


a. Strategy name: Start off by giving your strategy a name.

b. Pre-made rules: It consists of 14 pre-made rules or recommendation types which you can select from to show the type of product recommendations you want.

c. Custom rules: It allows you to add custom rules based on your requirements. The products that will meet those requirements will be shown in the widget you are setting up and applying the strategy to. Learn more about custom rules.

d. Pinned product: It allows you to pin a product that you want to highlight and prioritize in product recommendations all the time.

e. Exclusions: You can exclude products from recommendations. Three options to choose from: Exclude products in customers’ cart, Exclude specific products, Exclude by tag, Exclude by collection, Exclude by purchase options, and Exclude by vendor. Click here to know all the details


Please note that product exclusion and pinning are feasible depending on the recommendation type you've selected.


f. Product type: In this section, you can choose the type of product you would like to offer as product recommendations. The available options are One-time purchase only, Subscription only, Both ( One-time and subscription)


  • Offer promotion: In this section, you can enable and offer your customers discount offers on recommended products on the cart page.
  • Click Save to let your changes come into effect.


Move back to the offer editor to complete the rest of the settings.


  1. Set the trigger timing of the cart popup recommendation. Select the checkbox for one of the settings


  • Click cart page/drawer button (Shows when customers click the checkout button)
  • Click product detail page buttons


  1. Set the cart popup reoccurrence/display frequency


  • Show per order until customers accept/decline the offer or close the popup: display each time the customer clicks on the Checkout button on the Cart page until they either accept, reject, or close the offer. Once the customer takes any of these actions, the pre-purchase popup will appear again once the checkout is completed.
  • Show every time when triggered: display every time the customer clicks on the Checkout button on the Cart page, regardless of whether they previously accepted or declined the offer.
  • Show once per browsing session: only appear once per browsing session, either until the checkout is completed or until the customer starts a new browsing session or uses a different browser.


  1. Create scarcity and encourage customers to buy recommended products by running a countdown timer


  • Set the start time and give a striking description for the offer
  • Select the checkbox for disable if you don’t want to run any offer


  1. Widget installation: Refer to our in-built installation guide from the top right corner to enable AfterShip Personalization in Shopify App embeds.




Display




  1. Set the radius of the cart popup widget by dragging the radio button forward or backward on the bar.
  2. Set the padding of the widget on desktop and mobile.
  3. Edit the widget button text if the customer agrees to proceed with the offer or if he declines it.





  1. Add a title for the widget or Ask AI to write one. Set the title padding and adjust the alignment of the title.
  2. Decide what product information will be displayed and how it will be displayed under the Product content settings.


  • AfterShip Personalization has direct integration with AfterShip Reviews, Yotpo, Okendo, and Judge.me product reviews. Select the checkbox if you want to display product reviews via AfterShip reviews or other reviews apps.
  • You must install the necessary product review app to display review ratings to your upsell products.


  1. Configure the logic behind the variant preselection of the recommended products.


  • Unselected: This option gives shoppers the option to select the variant themselves without displaying any default variant.
  • Smart variant match: Automatically displays the best product variant based on the selected products or the cart items.
  • First available variant: Displays the first in-stock product variant in the Shopify admin to the shopper.
  • Select the checkboxes


a. If you want to Allow customers to change product quantity right from the offer widget.

b. If you want to Show subscription options for the product recommendations.


To display subscription options, you must install a subscription management app such as Recharge to set up subscription type, discount, and delivery frequency. 


  • Configure the radius of the variant quantity selector.

Style


Under the Style settings, change how your cart popup widget will look to the customers and make it brand-consistent.


The widget section will automatically sync with your Shopify store and match its theme. You can adjust the colors and fonts of this widget below.



Click Save to let the recommendation widget come into action.
